    A few months ago we were invited to a closed two-stage competition to design 4 residential houses close to The Historical Center of Riga. We were one of the two shortlisted teams to enter the second stage, however, this time luck wasn't on our side. One of the reasons could be the thing that we were too much in love with the first-stage proposal and didn't quite believe in the corrections and changes requested for the second stage. That's also the reason why we decided to share our initial proposal, not the later-stage design. Our concept was to create THE PLACE that catches the vibrant character of Miera street and serves as a green extension of the nearby Great Cemetery. The dancing eave line and seatbacks of Miera street allowed us to preserve the existing trees of the site, but two storeys-high galleries allowed more space for pedestrians, street cafes and small businesses in the currently narrow and unpleasant streetscape. All apartments have a 45-degree orientation towards the park allowing better views, more intimacy, nice outdoor spaces and better insolation. The first floors have a new typology - urban villas, Top floors are spacious penthouses, while the rest of the building contains quite compact two and three-room apartments.
